First let me tell you about the smallest and largest vessels that have
visited English Harbour. The smallest was 15 feet long - a Canary Islands
fishing boat, GRETHE, skippered single-handed by Peter Newe, who was to
become the captain of Barefoot Cruise's "Yankee Clipper". In 1966, he
sailed the 3,200 miles over the Atlantic from the Canaries in 42 days. For
his water supply Peter had stored 22 gallons in demi-johns, which he sucked
out by tube to the extent of 2 quarts a day. The largest was the 200 ft.
motor yacht MARALA, and was the longest ship to enter the harbour in 150
years.
