To encourage yachts to English Harbour, I started a little store of yacht maintenance materials in the little downstairs room on the south-east corner of the Dockyard's Officer's Quarters. I just had a few sheets of sandpaper, white paint and tools like wire brushes and scrapers, all of which I bought in town. This was not really done for profit, but as a convenience and encouragement for yachts to stay in English Harbour. Little did I know this would lead to a firm, Carib Marine Ltd, that would give profit for my life to come. Unfortunately it went bankrupt when I retired in 1985 to make the first true museum for
Antigua. I had left the firm in charge of other shareholders, who were too keen on credit
which eventually ran dry. |
