MAKAI, a 50 ft. Voyage sailing catamaran, built in 2001 is hull #1 and has beautiful guest staterooms with aquamarine, sea-foam green, seahorse bedspreads and blue fairy lights, plus pink, lime, green, and turquoise towel art…. She really is beautiful! There are three Queen beds with ensuite bathroom with telephone showers….that is, the bathrooms have no stall showers…. Like a kitchen sink, you lift the spray nozzle from the basin and wash that way; however, it is likely there are fresh water hoses on deck…. There is an additional short bed in the passageway starboard for a small child – and a small child it has to be, for the berth is not more than four feet in length. Otherwise, MAKAI has Happy Cabins! She also has a dandy crew! Bill and Crystal West are diehard fishermen from the Pacific Northwest who use every opportunity to spear, troll, cast, manhandle fish aboard…. And theyve got the refrigerators to freeze it too, but as Bill says, first you make Sushi…. Crystals cooking style is simple; she prefers to serve plain American/English fare, and they always do a rib eye night. They also do movie night; they bring the bean bags from the trampolines on the bow into the saloon to make room for everybody. Crystal plays the bagpipes and would like to play ‘Amazing Grace’ for guests at sunset on request. MAKAIs table settings are turquoise and lovely; Crystal delights guests with her exquisite blooming teas! This past summer MAKAI received a huge refit. Bill has been involved in marine mechanics for 30 years and goes from boat to boat fixing them up. This summer he gave MAKAI new lighting, new interior paint, new generator, watermaker, ice maker, stereo, invertor, and new plumbing…. Their new, high-speed dinghy is coming in February; meanwhile, they have snorkeling and in-water lounge toys. This 50′ Voyage really is a well-equipped yacht with beautiful soft furnishings for elegant cruising.
“The wildlife delighted us,” wrote MAKAI’s guests this past Christmas, referring to the Virgin Islands wildlife, “Hawksbill Turtles, sting rays, tarpon, barracuda, osprey, eels, pelicans, frigate birds, lizards, iguanas, remora, butterflies, the stunning tropical fish of all colors & patterns, and especially – my favorite! – those inquisitive little Sergeant Majors.” This lady with her love for animals is right after my own heart!
