Description:

CATATONIC – Quietly achieving, curious, low key captain Dirk and first mate/chef Sandy run this beautifully decorated, well maintained, 51’ Lagoon catamaran with many amenities, because they are called to the sea.  Dirk’s interest in technology and his and Sandy’s adventurous former professional lives make them naturals…. Sandy complements Dirk well…. Their beautiful saloon had gorgeous plates of muffins and coffee ready to be consumed during our inspection.  The table in the main saloon with black leather couches and cherry paneling folds into a compact coffee table for comfortable living, or it can be expanded for dining, if guests would rather dine indoors and not alfresco.  And what a beautiful table they set too!

Guests can connect their phones to the Apple TV in the saloon with bluetooth speakers, perhaps to play their favorite music, or to show their photos of the day; the yacht has a Go Pro drone aboard, and Dirk supplements his guests photos with aerial shots and underwater photography.  Families love replaying the videos Dirk gives them of their cruise long after their charter is over.

Dirk and Sandy replaced the bimini awning over the fly bridge with a hard top three times the size of the old one; guests love to spend time up there now, enjoying the views in the shade.

Diving is offered.  Included for certified divers, the yacht supplies tanks, BCs, masks and snorkels; Dirk, who is kindly, caring, polite, tall, quiet and interesting tells me the yacht has good masks aboard, the kind that are red tinted that bring out the color of the reefs, and Dirk dives with guests.  And he’s not just a dive instructor; he’s a rescue diver; both he and Sandy are; both are trained EMT ambulance drivers from their previous careers; they are accomplished divers, but they do not instruct. They carry a defibrillator aboard… They carry kitesurf equipment aboard, and they do instruct guests in kitesurfing.

The yacht offers three beautiful cabins to guests.  All three Queens are ample-sized; the two Queens forward have steps leading up to them, for the beds are level with the windows in the hull, offering views of the cruising ground.  Sandy’s personal art work hangs on the walls; linens are all fresh, blue and white in each guest stateroom; beds are turned down each night and made up each morning.  The cabins always look fresh and ready to be used.

Owner operators, Dirk and Sandy owned Catatonic 40 footer for years with crew, but in August 2017, they ran the yacht themselves, then lost the 40 footer in Irma, so they repurchased this bigger one.  Knowledgeable of wines, they are careful to purchase good brands.  A comfortable boat, Dirk tells me people arrive as guests but leave as friends.

CATATONIC sails from St. Thomas November through May and from Newport, Rhode Island June through September and charters for $15,000 to $19,000 weekly all inclusive in both places (rates slide according to number in party), except $22,000 weekly for Christmas week and $24,000 weekly for New Year’s week with turnaround day on December 27th.  All charters start and end in marinas; the yacht is happy to cruise the Spanish Virgin Islands too.  They’re also happy to cruise St. Maarten, St. Barths and Saba too if weather conditions are right (spring is best for that.)  In New England, they cruise to Nantucket, starting and ending in Newport, Rhode Island.

Water Toys – 14′ center console tender with 60 hp outboard, waterskis, kneeboard, snorkel gear, tube, wakeboard, two single kayaks, floating mats, swim ladder, beach games, two stand up paddle boards, two fishing rods USVI only; kitesurf equipment & Instruction, scuba diving including 8 tanks & BCs included for certified divers, Sliding rigger rowing paddle board
