Description:

KUMA TOO – Though built in 2005, Captain Joe tells me this excellent 47’ Leopard catamaran was used by a man whose daughter was in vet school in Grenada, and the yacht is in mint condition.  He also points out the yacht just had a 2019 refit and has all new gel foam mattresses with cooling layer and organic cotton toppers, and they are dressed with all new Oeko-Tex sheets, which means they are certified free of harmful chemicals and are safe for human use.   The yacht also has new trampolines, and all new water toys, including a giant 18’ flamingo, which is popular with children and adults alike.  Although Joe and Mandy have three years chartering experience, this is their first year chartering in the Virgin Islands, but what’s interesting is where they chartered before coming to the Virgin Islands on KUMA TOO: the West coast of Florida, based in Clearwater, with cruises to Captiva Island, Sarasota, and the Dry Tortugas.

When we met Joe and Mandy in St. Thomas during November, 2019, they pulled out all the stops to show us they know service; they know chartering:  Greeting us with ice cold towels, they offered us lemon or iced tea, sangria and lemon cheese tarts – yes please!  They showed us videos of their food, showing artistic plating, showing haute cuisine; it’s obvious this yacht is for foodies!  Mandy is artistic.  Joe said, “Mandy is not just a cook; she is a chef.”  So he put together this video.  The saloon had color coordinated throw cushions on tan upholstery, a rustic trunk, succulents, outrigger canoe from Bora Bora, a map table, and bright Navy blue cockpit cushions with green and Navy table runner in the cockpit.  The cushions are bright, because all the fabrics are new.  The saloon flows out into the cockpit, which is on the same level as the saloon for indoor / outdoor living; dine al fresco in the cockpit, and what a prettily set table it is too.

But who doesn’t love a beautifully appointed, comfortable sitting room.  I do!  And KUMA TOO’s is particularly comfortable and pleasing  With coffee table instead of dining table, one can sit easily and enjoy the gracious living and the pretty views from the room.

Now this yacht is priced at only $10,500 to $12,500 weekly all inclusive for two to six guests from St. Thomas ($13,750 for Christmas; $15,000 for New Years), yet here this crew is providing five  star service as though this 47’ yacht were a hundred footer.  But bring it on!  Rates are probably ‘introductory,’  because this is their first year chartering in the Virgin Islands – but it doesn’t do any harm to bring knowledge from the larger yachts to the smaller yachts, making it all it can be for smaller yachts too.

We are impressed by this young, talented couple, and Joe seems to adore Mandy.  One caveat: this yacht has wet heads; that is, the showers don’t have stalls.  Items left on the counters while showering get wet, but the heads use fresh water, not salt, and they have electric pumping, and the cabins are theatric sets.  Mandy does turn down service.  She makes the beds in the morning and turns down the beds at night.  Lights dim to sleep mode at night.
