Description:

McGREGOR III – Rustic charm!  You enter the saloon of this 60’ Jefferson motor yacht, built in 2001 with 16 ft beam, and the natural light streaming in through the picture windows hits you, as it combines with the gracious couches in white, the varnished maple paneling, and the solid cherry wood floors, reminding you of a country estate.  “I found her in a lake,” explains Captain Tim, showing me the etched glass cupboard over the bar that lights up with the flick of a switch.  To aft is the galley, a bar, a dinette, and doorway to a sun lounge, off of which is a dive platform down a few steps, ‘because that’s what we do on this boat,” says Tim; “we scuba dive, and we snorkel.”  Stairs lead up to the fly bridge from here too, “because that’s our main outside area,” says Tim, pointing out that the better steps to the fly bridge are forward through the bridge.  To me I see nothing but potential as I tour this darling, comfortable, country yacht, now with blue Caribbean sea surrounding her, because it has not one but two King-size staterooms for guests, plus one upper and lower twin stateroom with couch, each with bathroom with electric head and shower, and the master stateroom even has a bathtub!  “She’s 16 years old,” says Tim.  I jot this down, thinking what a classic!  What a custom, one of a kind!  What a find! “We cater to two couples,” says Julie, his wife, “although we take up to six guests, family or other.” There’s a den with L-shaped settee, TV and office, an area to watch movies, plus there are private crew quarters; the whole yacht is air conditioned and beautifully appointed in white linen, gray spreads and highly varnished wood interior with flowers and gracious comfortable living; natural light streams in, and the wood work shimmers.  The VIP King cabin converts to twins for families with bathroom across the hall.  “We have two generators,” says Julie, “and also an invertor.  This enables us to run Fridays without a generator for peace and quiet, yet still have AC.”  (In the Virgin Islands there’s a move afoot to run Fridays without generators to honor Greta Fineburg, since for years yachts in the Virgin Islands have not used plastic bottles, nor commercial sun screens; yachts provide reef-friendly products and shampoos to guests.)  Now a Caribbean-based yacht, Tim, who has lived in the Caribbean for over 20 years tells me they removed the wall from the fly bridge aft to open up the area to breezes…  Simultaneously, they built in the area, where normally the tender is stowed, extending the fly bridge, since they tow tenders in the calm waters of the Virgin Islands; they don’t stow them; and now they offer al fresco dining up here; they join the two tables together, set a beautiful table; it’s cool, comfortable, shady and breezy, a great place to enjoy the views by day, dine, and watch the sun go down at night.  Julie adds one more thing.  “After an hour snorkeling during the day, you get cold, so you want the sun.  The bow offers coolers with cushions and McGregor-beach bean bags, and a bench settee.  So we warm ourselves in the sun.”

McGREGOR III is based in St. Thomas year round except August and September and charters for $17,000 to $21,000 weekly all inclusive for two to six guests (rates slide according to number in party), except $24,000 weekly for Christmas and/or New Years.
